TİHV report shows curfews declared by Turkish gov’t adversely affected 1,6 million people

A report released by Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (TİHV) on Thursday has showed that at least 1 million 809 thousands people were adversely and severely affected in terms of the right to life, the right to health and other fundamental human rights by the curfews frequently declared in Kurdish dominated residential areas by Turkish government between August 2015 and June 2017.

According to the data compiled by TİHV Documentation Center, at least 218 curfews had been declared in 10 provinces and 43 districts since the first curfew entering into force on August 16, 2015. TİHV stated that the curfews  have led to serious violations of human rights, rights of the residents to life and health in the cities, towns and villages where the curfews were declared.

TİHV report has listed the provinces and districts in which curfews had been declared between August 16, 2015 and June 1, 2107 and showed that at least 218 officially confirmed round-the-clock and open-ended curfews in 10 cities and at least 43 districts have been declared so far in Turkey.

According to TİHV report the Kurdish dominated cities where the government has frequently declared curfews are as follows: Diyarbakır (127 times), Mardin (32 times), Hakkari (20 times), Şırnak (13 times), Bitlis (8 times), Batman (3 times), Muş (4 times), Bingöl (5 times), Tunceli (5 times) and Elazığ (1 time).

The curfews, which entered into force as of May 30, are still in effect in 10 villages in Lice district, 21 villages in Hani district and 10 villages in Dicle district of Diyarbakır.

Turkish government has imposed curfews in more than 40 villages in southeastern province of Diyarbakir early Tuesday as part of a security operation against the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), the governor’s office in Diyarbakır said in a written statement. The curfews in 43 villages in Lice, Hani, Kocaköy and Dicle districts have started on early Tuesday and are still in place.

Over 1,200 people, including security forces and civilians, have lost their lives since Turkish government and the PKK, listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US, and EU, resumed clashes again in July 2015.
